The NRA Collaborative were commissioned to complete the heritage architecture to renovate Sydney’s Sailors Home. Opened in 1865, the Sydney Sailors home provided an onshore residence for mariners visiting the port from abroad. Located in Sydney’s harbourside ‘Rocks’ district, the Sailors Home developed into one of the city’s notable facilities remaining in operation until the 1970’s.
This four storey building has been restored and adapted to house the Rocks Heritage Centre for the Sydney Cove Authority. Restoration of all building surfaces and introduction of new services strongly emphasise the building’s traditional function. The central residential hall of 1863 with two levels of sleeping galleries and three storey atrium, provides a spectacular visitors centre and heritage museum of the Rock area. The original basement and surrounding additions from 1926, house a basement jazz venue, restaurant and tourist information rooms.
